Homemade Almond Milk...

Hi Friends,

I saw on a blog somewhere of how to make your own Homemade Almond Milk using raw almonds of all things - HA. So I thought I would give it a try. It was a lot easier then it sounds, and way cheaper.

First you take a cup of raw almonds and place them in a jar and fill with filtered water, not tap. Let them soak over night.

In the morning rinse the almonds real good and place in blender. I have a Vitamix and it works real good. Fill with 4 cups of filtered water and run on high for about 3 minutes or so.

And what do you know? It actually looks just like Almond Milk. It was warm because that's what the vitamix does, so if you are gonna drink it - you need to refrigerate it first.

The next step is to strain it real good. She says to use linen or an old t-shirt over your strainer, but I just used  my strainer, and throw away the pulp that is left - which seems like shame cause it tasted like the frothy stuff on top of cappuccino.

1 Cup of Almonds makes 4 cups of milk.

After it was strained she says to pour it into ice cube trays - which I don't have LOL. So I used my silicone muffin cups which made them bigger but it still worked.

I saved some in the fridge so I could do a taste test and see what the difference was between the store kind and home made.
As you can see they look very similar and they both taste real good. Of course the Silk one has vanilla.

Ok now for he part of the ice cubes.. That is for making home made ice cream. She said to take 12 ice cubes - which I didn't know how many of mine so I just guessed and 1/8-1/4c of coconut milk. Could not find the kind she suggested so I bought Sprouts brand light coconut milk in the can, and liquid stevia which I don't have so I used xylitol (which I already had), and some flavors.

Of course I have middle-heimers and could not remember and tried to do it in my food processor, which sprayed the milk everywhere. LOL It would work like a million times better in my Vitamix.

I put a little vanilla extract and some berries. Not bad - if I do say so myself.
OK so there you go. Have fun. :-)

  1. Sounds like someone's been reading Healthy Living How To's blog ... Vanessa has some nice recipes (check out her recipe section). I'm going to try her chocolate chip cookies - yum! You could add vanilla extract to your almond milk for a vanilla version. I made my own for awhile but we go through quite a bit here so I gave up and started buying it. I make a strawberry "ice cream" in my Vitamix that my kids just love. It's kind of like soft serve.

  2. Well, it certainly seems easy enough. I live twenty minutes from any grocery store, so I will have to remember this one when I'm in a pinch. Like how inexpensive it is.

  3. How fun! I heard that you can use the leftover almond goop as flour, if you let it dry out. I'd like to try this sometime. have a great day!

Some tips if you are having trouble

  • First make sure that you are staying under the 15/6. 15 sugars and 6 servings of carbs for the whole day. Thats no more than 5 sugars and 2 servings of carbs per meal.
  • Track all of your sugar/carbs. Add everything from your meal together and count them that way.
  • Try to stop eating whole grain carbs after 3pm.
  • Make sure you drink lots of water.
  • Count everything that you put into your mouth. Even sauces - everything , check labels.
  • Make sure that you don't eat any artificial sugars. Check labels, if it says sugar free - look in the ingredients, look for....sucralose, aspartame, saccharine in the ingredients. Those are BAD!
  • Going #2 is a big problem when a lot of people start the BFC. I have solved that problem with Clear Benefiber in my morning coffee and a scoop of Super Seed w/water in the afternoon. (you can buy the super seed on Amazon.com it is the cheapest).
  • Choose your carbs wisely. Try to pick the carbs that will give you the lowest count of carbs, sugar and calories and the most fiber.

I hope this helps.
